Los Angeles, California

Generations of Americans have been lured to this sprawling seaside megalopolis in search of fame, fortune or just a good beach. The City of Angels takes all kinds. The city known for sprawl, smog and traffic snarls also has a healthy food scene, where high-flying fine dining sits comfortably beside low-key bohemian cafes and sensational Mexican joints. Indeed, California can claim inspiration for many of our favorite foods. Though the hamburger had been around, the illustrious cheeseburger was invented in Pasadena in 1920. Other Los Angeles creations include the Popsicle, hot fudge sundae, and the French dip. In the 1930s, Hollywood's Brown Derby restaurant was the birthplace of both the Cobb salad and the Shirley Temple. Most recently, Los Angeles gave us the fruit smoothie. Los Angeles also inspired Wolfgang Puck to put a distinctively California spin on pizzas. The Los Angeles Farmers Market at 3rd and Fairfax is a food (and people-watching) experience not to be missed; it’s been operating since 1934, when much of the land around Los Angeles was still quiet orchards and farmland.

About me:
I have grown up in a family who makes good food a priority. Ever since I was little, with my own Easy Bake Oven, I have loved making anything and everything, from toast to escargots. Most of my skill comes from my mother, who is a cook straight from heaven. Without her I would be lost.

Taco Soup II

Reviewed on Oct. 5, 2008 by QUILTNCAT
This taco soup variation is one of my favorites. It's just so easy and so good, and is great leftover or even reheated after being frozen. Works well in the crock pot too, and is a favorite at office pot lucks.

Onion Chicken in Balsamic Sauce

Reviewed on Oct. 5, 2008 by QUILTNCAT
Though we love everything in this recipe and had high hopes, it really fell flat. The chicken was so bland. I actually double checked the recipe after making this, because it seemed as though I must have missed something...but I didn't. It smelled great but needed lots of garlic salt to make it edible. Not a recipe we plan on trying again.

Peach Crisp III

Reviewed on Oct. 5, 2008 by QUILTNCAT
As suggested by others, I used 3 smashed Quaker oats and honey granola bars in place of the granola. I also mixed the spices into the topping before sprinkling on the peaches. I really liked this recipe. My biggest complaint is that the topping didn't really get crisp. I cooked it for over 40 minutes hoping for crunchier, chunkier topping but it did not happen. The flavors and level of sweetness were excellent. I'd probably use a bit more flour or cornstarch on the peaches as there was some liquid in the bottom of the pan, but that was more a cosmetic issue than a flavor one.
